Back in June I posted about changing to more environmentally friendly period products. (My latest favourite is the Kind Organic range which you can get from Boots and Ocado.) I have however finally gotten over myself to take the next step and I am now using a menstrual cup with washable pads and pants instead….. Why oh why didn’t I do this sooner? It is such a revelation!
I was initially a bit overwhelmed by the choice of cups, however I finally chose a Rubycup as not only do they donate a cup for every cup bought but they also offer a free exchange for a different size if you need it (which I did). It may take a bit of time to get the right fit (I had to change to a smaller size and even had to cut the stem off) but it is so worth it.
I have been using the cup for a couple of months now and I absolutely love the potential of it. It is definitely taking a bit of time to get used to and so while I am practising I am also still using environmentally friendly pads and reusable pads as a backup. Hopefully next month though I will not need these and then I will just be able to use my Modibodi period pants which I absolutely love. I have also been using these for a couple of months now (just on the very light days) and they are brilliant.
In terms of the cleaning, I have also bought the RubyClean which is a special pot for steam sterilising the cup in the microwave each month and which I also find really useful for storing the cup. For the period pants and reusable pads I like to use a Mucky Box (which was included as part of the pack of reusable pads that I bought from Cheeky Wipes) as it is a very useful way to discreetly store items that need to be washed.
For anyone that is still reluctant to try a cup and reusables, this was something that I never thought I would be able get my head around but I am so glad that I did. Yes it does take a bit of time to get used to the cup and there is a small amount of cleaning to do, but weighing that up against the environmental impact of the disposable products is a no brainer for me.
If you still need a bit more of encouragement, the Modibodi period pants really are so much more comfortable than pantyliners and pads, plus with the cup having up to 3 times the capacity of a super tampon it means you can wear it for up to 12 hours. I am not sure why I would ever want to use a tampon again?!
