Trousers

It is always a nice surprise when I find sustainable choices easy to find in a mainstream High Street shop. My latest discovery has been the H&M Conscious clothing range.

Having been unable to find the hand-me-down trousers for my youngest and my eldest son’s legs suddenly growing, I have recently had to buy some new trousers for both of them to get us through the Christmas holidays.

I was initially a bit worried that it might take me a while to find something relatively sustainable, however I was delighted to find that the H&M Conscious range have some lovely tracksuit bottoms that are made out of Organic Cotton and Recycled Polyester.

Unfortunately, the trousers that I initially ordered online turned out to be quite thin, however when I then managed to go in-store (pre-lockdown) I was able to find some really nice thicker ones (with an even better Organic Cotton percentage).

I used to think of organic products as a “nice to have” option just for food, however after learning about the many considerable benefits of organic products, including cotton, I have realised that organic actually needs to be a key criteria in my purchasing choices from now on. For example, not only does organic cotton emit up to 46% less greenhouse gas than non-organic, but it also uses less water and avoids the use of polluting chemicals.

Of course, I still need to be limiting my consumption of clothes overall and most of H&M’s other products are definitely not sustainable. However, I am at least very encouraged by their sustainability page on their website that they are making an effort to lower their impact as a business. I therefore want to show my support to them for bringing such sustainable options to the mainstream High Street.

Now I just have to try to make sure these new trousers last long enough to be able to be passed on to at least one more active boy after this year’s tree climbing, mud crawling and knee sliding!
